Stories of Faith: Learning to Tell the Story

Stories of Faith will be taking us through some of the great stories of the Old Testament and inviting us to reflect on the story of faith in our own lives.

The writer to the Hebrews reminds us: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). That chapter then goes on to tell the stories of men and women who trusted God - sometimes with courage, sometimes with hesitation, often without knowing where the journey would lead.

Over nine weeks we will walk with Abraham, Noah, Ruth, Gideon, Joseph, Moses, David, Esther and Daniel. Each of them faced uncertainty, challenge, and moments where trusting God was costly. Yet in every story we see the faithfulness of God at work.

What makes this series particularly special is that alongside these biblical stories, members of our own church family will also be sharing something of their own story of faith. Not because every story is dramatic, but because every story matters. Faith is often formed quietly - in prayer, in hardship, in waiting, in acts of love, and in those moments when we discover that God has been at work all along.

In a culture where many people feel nervous about speaking of faith, this series is an opportunity to grow in confidence. As we look ahead to our Alpha course in September, we want to become a church community that is more able to speak naturally about God’s presence in our lives - sharing not simply arguments or ideas, but our lived experience of his grace.

Perhaps one of the greatest encouragements of Scripture is this: God does not only work through extraordinary people. He works through ordinary people who trust him. Abraham simply said yes. Ruth remained loyal. Gideon was fearful. Esther was hesitant. David was young. Daniel was exiled. Yet through them all, God’s purposes unfolded.

The same is true today.

So as we journey through these stories together, may we be encouraged to recognise God’s faithfulness in our own lives, to listen well to the stories of others, and perhaps even to find the courage to tell our own.

Because faith is not only something we inherit - it is something we live, and something we share.

Prayer for the Series

Faithful God,
we thank you for the stories of those who have gone before us—
for Abraham’s trust, Ruth’s loyalty, David’s courage, Esther’s boldness, and Daniel’s steadfastness.

As we journey through these stories this summer,
open our hearts to see your faithfulness more clearly in our own lives.
Give us courage to trust you when the path is uncertain,
strength to follow when the cost is high,
and wisdom to recognise your presence in the ordinary moments of life.

Help us to become a people who speak of your goodness with confidence,
who encourage one another in faith,
and who are ready to share the hope we have in Christ.

Prepare us for the opportunities ahead,
especially as we look towards Alpha,
that through our witness others may come to know your love.

In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
