PASTORAL CARE

As part of pastoral care, we offer spiritual guidance, emotional support, and practical help to nurture others in their faith and well-being.

The Importance of Pastoral Care

As a church, we believe pastoral care is at the heart of who we are, reflecting Christ’s love through compassion and support.  It’s about being there for one another, walking alongside people in their joys and struggles, and offering hope and encouragement in every season of life.

Pastoral care allows us to serve our church family and wider community in meaningful ways. Whether it’s listening to someone facing grief or personal challenges, praying with individuals, or offering guidance during times of uncertainty, we are here to provide spiritual and emotional support.

Sometimes, this care also extends to practical help, such as assisting families in crisis or connecting them with resources they may need.

What makes this so important is the sense of belonging and connection it creates. Through pastoral care, we help one another grow in faith, face life’s difficulties with resilience, and know that no one walks alone.  As a church, we want to be a source of comfort and encouragement, pointing people to the love and hope found in Jesus. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels supported, valued, and strengthened in their journey of faith.

What we can offer

Home Communion

Home communions offer the Lord’s Supper to those unable to attend church due to illness, mobility issues, or other circumstances. It’s a way to stay spiritually connected and reminded of God’s love and the church family’s care.

This service is for anyone in need, whether recovering from surgery, managing a long-term condition, or caring for a loved one at home. To arrange a home communion, simply contact the church office or speak with a pastoral team member.

Through this ministry, we bring prayer, scripture, and communion to you, ensuring everyone feels included in the life of the church.

Hospital Visits

Being unwell or in pain can be a challenging and frightening time, and the prayer and support of the church can bring comfort and peace. Our ministry team is here to offer spiritual care and encouragement through hospital visits, providing a reminder of God’s love and the support of your church family.

We have strong connections with chaplains at Royal Berkshire Hospital via our Lay Minister, Andy Ferguson.  If you or someone you know becomes an in-patient, we can visit or arrange for a chaplain to do so, ensuring spiritual support is always available.

To request a visit, simply call Andy.

Home Visits

Life’s challenges, such as strained relationships, health issues, or family worries, can feel overwhelming. Home visits provide comfort and support, offering a Christian perspective during difficult times.

Our pastoral visitors are here to listen, pray, and encourage. They may guide you toward helpful resources or services while fostering hope and trust in God. These visits aim to bring healing and wholeness, whether through reconciliation with others, finding peace with God, or simply feeling heard and cared for.

If you or someone you know would benefit from a home visit, contact the church office or a member of the pastoral team. We are here to walk alongside you with Christlike compassion.

Bereavement Support

The Church of England has long helped individuals and families navigate the end of life with compassion and support. Planning a funeral often comes in the midst of grief and uncertainty, and our Ministry Team works closely with families, either in the time leading up to a death or after a loss, to prepare a meaningful service.

Funerals in church are deeply special, as they place the loss of a loved one in the light of Jesus’ promise of eternal life. This brings hope, comfort, and assurance to those mourning, reminding us of God’s love even in sorrow.

Our care extends beyond the funeral. St Mary’s remains open during the day for quiet reflection and we hold an Annual Parish Bereavement Service in November to remember those that are no longer with us.

Your Funeral, Your Wishes

Your Funeral, Your Wishes

St Mary’s will be hosting a thoughtful and reflective morning on Saturday 17th May at 9am, where you can explore how you would like your farewell to be shaped. Join us as we listen to hymns, music, and readings, and learn about the different types of funeral services available.

This gentle and informative session will help you consider your choices so that, by the end of the morning, you can have a written plan of your wishes to guide your loved ones in the future.

Prayer Request

We invite you to share your prayers with us as part of our church community. Whether it's a personal request, a prayer for a loved one, or something you'd like to lift up on behalf of others, we welcome your contributions. Please send your prayers to our Pastoral team, and know that they will be held in prayer by our church family. Let us come together in faith and support each other through the power of prayer.
