Peter Dart
Director of Music at St. Mary's Church
We are delighted to have appointed Peter Dart as our Director of Music.
A physicist by training, marketer by profession and former organ scholar at Hertford College Oxford between 1972 and 1975, Peter has held various church musical positions at Windsor Parish Church, Virginia Water and Hurst.
He is a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music, Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
A committed Christian, his philosophy on worship is that every service is an opportunity to draw people into the church, to engage and inspire them, help their faith grow, and to build something better for the future. For him every Sunday matters. Every service matters.
Regarding music in services, his view is that it’s all about ‘balance’ – you should have something for everyone, without turning the whole thing into a mishmash. Peter comments: “It’s about having good, sing-able, relevant hymns and songs. There is a lot of rubbish from the 19th century – as well as the 20th century. Equally some of the most motivating and inspiring hymns are traditional, as well as contemporary.”
In addition to playing the organ, Peter’s aim will be to build up a choir able to sing well in 4 parts, involve young people and use a variety of instruments building on what exists already.
Peter is married to Annette and they have three children, Rosie, Charlie and Katie, who attend local schools.
In his day job Peter works in a senior position for WPP, one of the world’s largest media companies, is involved in several charitable organisations and owns and lives at Stanlake Park Vineyard, Twyford. Contact him here
