On 18th November 2011, The Vicar announced the appointment of Peter Dart as the new Director of Music for St. Mary's Church. Until he establishes a new set of objectives and responsibilities for the music, the text below remains in place as the current set of arrangements. More information about Peter is available here.
Music at the 10.30 service at St. Mary's on Sunday mornings is led each week by the Music Group, which is made up of singers and instrumentalists, and the organ. The music is a mixture of traditional hymns, often accompanied by the organ, and contemporary worship songs, usually accompanied by the piano and other instruments. The instruments used are varied and currently include clarinet, flute, saxophone, cello, guitar and bassoon and we are always keen to encourage others to join us. We try and work in as flexible a way as possible; from week to week the line-up varies. We usually have a pre-service rehearsal. We also hold singing rehearsals on some Friday evenings to develop people's singing skills. Except for the monthly 'All-age service' on the 2nd Sunday of the month, the children go out during the service to their own groups and therefore are not involved in the music. However they are invited to join with the singers for some special occasions, and additional rehearsals are held when necessary.
Music for the bi-monthly evening WoW services is led by a different team of singers and a smaller group of instrumentalists.
