Church Schools within the Parish

Within the Parish of Wargrave with Knowl Hill, we are blessed in having our children’s local Infant, Junior and Secondary education delivered by 5 Church Schools, all providing an excellent level of education as positively measured by recent Ofsted and SIAS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools) reports. The Mission Statement of the Oxford Diocesan Board of Education for our Church Schools is as follows:

“The Diocesan Board is committed to the education of the whole person to the fullest potential, to the development of moral and spiritual understanding, to the uniqueness of the individual and to the education of all within the maintained system.”

This relationship is formalised by the appointment by the Diocese of Foundation Governors nominated by the Parochial Church Council(s). But it takes practical effect in the opportunities provided to the Parish Clergy to play an active rôle in the life of the schools, in class, in assembly, and in out of school activities. The schools regard the Parish Churches as their places of worship for special occasions like Christmas or Leavers' Services.

Information about the schools can be found on their respective websites:

The Foundation Governors for our local Church Schools

Foundation Governors, in common with all members of the Governing Body are there to ensure that the school provides the best possible education for every pupil/student, with the main roles of the Governing Body usually seen as:-

  • ·         Providing a strategic overview
  • ·         Acting as a critical friend
  • ·         Ensuring accountability

There are, however, many other roles that a Governor gets involved with.

Foundation Governors, who are appointed by either the Parochial Church Council (PCC), the Diocesan Board of Education, the Deanery, a foundation body, such as the trustees or original founders of the school, or as an ex officio governor by virtue of office, also have the role of:-

  • ·         Ensuring that the character of the school is maintained
  • ·         Being responsible for Collective Worship reflecting the Anglican tradition
  • ·         Being responsible for the RE in Voluntary Aided Church Schools, although, in Voluntary Controlled Church Schools, this is the responsibility of the Local Education Authority.
