Reach out, Draw in, Build up, Send out

Baptism Sunday - 9th January 2011

"The Journey of a thousand miles begins with one step"

(Paraphrase of an ancient Chinese Proverb)

For many children their first step on the Spiritual Journey to eternal life, and the ‘abundant life’ Jesus promised, begins as a baby at their baptism.

For many parents, the reality of that journey in their lives is often awakened at the awesome wonder and joy they experience at their own child's birth.

For many adults, being asked to be godparent, is the time when their life long quest for what it is to live a fully human life is refocused in the declarations, promises and responsibilities they accept in love for the parents and child.

For Jesus, Baptism was his decision to accept God's call on his life - the moment of public obedience and dedication - the commitment of love for Abba, Father God, and God's affirmation of love for His ‘beloved Son’.

On January the 9th, the Church throughout the world celebrates The Baptism of Jesus Christ'. What a timely opportunity, at the beginning of a New Year, to stop and reflect on our baptism, our vocation as god parents and church, and our children's spiritual growth.

We held special ‘Family Services’ celebrating the Baptism of Jesus on the 9th January; 9:15 at Knowl Hill and 10:30 at Wargrave, where we also celebrated the Baptism of Ethan Benger.

At these services we gave thanks for Jesus' leading, shared the commitment all Christians have to one another in Baptism, especially children, and made our own renewal of promises, our own next step as a follower of Jesus Christ.

There was information about the ways we can offer everyone a path to knowing God, Our Father, more fully, exploring your 'faith journey' and living with the reality of Jesus from crèche to .... well our most senior housegroup member is over 90! Is anyone excluded?

While we enjoyed coffee and cakes or tea and biscuits, members of the activity groups were available to explain more of how that interest builds up faith - from music to meditative prayer; from Sunday Club to study; from Breakfasts for Men and Women to Butterflies for carers and their pre-school children; from personal pastoring to pastoral care for others; from youth groups to young families' networks - we trust there is something for everyone ( of no faith, little faith or old faith) - and that means each of us can have companions and a way forward on our discipleship journey.
